5th Grade LVAA Clay Tile Mural Project

After practicing with oil based clay and learning clay vocabulary and more, my 5th grade is finishing their tile mural project. This project was funded by a grant I received from the Louisville Visual Art Association. The portrait tiles will be put together to form our school mascot, a dolphin, after they are fired in my kiln. I may be art on a cart but I've made it work!

Carolyn Braden: LVAA 5th Grade Grant Tile Project

While waiting for my kiln to be ready for use, we are prepping to start our LVAA (Louisville Visual Art Association) funded tile project. Fifth grade students will be creating 4-inch low relief self portrait tiles. When they paint their tile, they must follow a painting diagram I created. After the tile mural is assembled, viewers will see the self portraits when standing close, then see our school mascot, the dolphin, when standing further away. See my diagram in the photo below. Some classes will start sketches next week.

LVAA Grant: Received by Visual Art Teacher, Carolyn Braden

I received a grant a few weeks ago that will fund an art project I planned for my 5th grade students. Here is the article from the JCPS Monday Memo:

Kudos to Martha Bartlett, art teacher at South Park Teenage Parent Program (TAPP), and Carolyn Braden, art teacher at Schaffner Traditional Elementary. Bartlett and Braden were both awarded with JCPS Visual Art Supply Fund Grants, which they will use to initiate special visual arts projects in their schools. Bartlett will create a personal story quilt with each of her students that can eventually be passed down from generation to generation. They will reflect on their lives using journaling, memory, exploration, lifelines, and sharing to develop the significant life events into a story. Braden will create a ceramic relief tile mural for the Schaffner lobby with her fifth-grade students. The students will create a relief self-portrait on a clay tile that will ultimately form the shape of a dolphin, which is the school's mascot. Application deadlines for the Louisville Visual Art Association (LVAA)-sponsored JCPS Visual Art Supply Fund grant are Thurs., Nov. 15, and Sat., June 15. New Rotation and Update September 28th, 2010!

It's already time for a new rotation of classes!  My new group starts tomorrow, Wednesday, September 29th.  If your student is in art right now, they will rotate to Arts and Humanities tomorrow. 

During this rotation here are some things we recently started and will finish when this rotation returns to art:

Fifth grade is starting on their Graffiti Arts:  The Good and The Bad project.  We are using oil pastel techniques to make our graffiti appear like it was sprayed on our paper.

Third grade is starting on their Georgia O'Keefe geometric/organic flower project.

Kindergarten started working with patterns.  They met Patty the pattern turtle and are working to color her shell in an ABAB pattern using warm or cool colors.

First grade is finishing their Guided Drawing of the Rainbow Fish.  They will begin their ideas for their upcoming Oil Pastel Symmetrical African Mask project.

Second grade is learning about geometric and organic shapes.  They learned that Pablo Picasso loved geometric shapes and Henri Matisse loved organic shapes with the book When Pigasso Met Mootisse.  They will be learning to draw portraits using ideas from this book. 

Fifth grade will have an artist in residence working with them starting in November.  They will be working on tiles for a tile mural installation for Byck Elementary.  The project will be created with the help of the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft. 

I am currently working on a grant to have Michelle Amos, a Louisville artist, to come work with my third graders on making Native American Kachina Dolls. 

Discover classes start on Friday, October 8th.  My class this year is called Advanced Art:  Think Big!  We will be doing very large scale paintings and other advanced art projects.

I will  be updating again soon about my new addition to my class.  I have a student teacher coming to work and learn in my classroom.  She is from Murray State University.  She will be in my classroom October 4th through early December.
